Hey there, olive oil lovers! Growing up on the island, I spent countless winters collecting olives with my father, just like he did with my παππού (grandpa), and now I continue the tradition with my brother. I can tell you that Zakynthian olive oil isn’t just a cooking ingredient – it’s literally liquid gold that runs through our island’s history.
The liquid gold of Zakynthos
Our olive trees, some of them centuries old, dot the landscape from Kiliomeno to Volimes. We mainly grow the Koroneiki variety, known for its fruity taste with a peppery kick at the end – that’s how you know you’ve got the good stuff!

Local tips:
- Best time to visit olive mills? Late October to early December during the harvest. That’s when you’ll see the action and taste the freshest oil!
- Look for the term “αγουρέλαιο” (early harvest oil) – it’s more expensive but has the most intense flavor and highest antioxidants.
What to buy:
- Extra Virgin Olive Oil (most popular)
- Olive Oil Cosmetics (great gifts)
- Olive Wood Kitchen Tools
- Traditional Olive Oil Soaps
How we use it
In Zakynthos, we drizzle our best olive oil on everything! Try it on:
- Greek salad (horiatiki) - it makes all the difference!
- Grilled octopus at the tavernas
- Simple boiled horta (wild greens) with lemon
Shopping Guide:
- Expect to pay €15-20 for a good quality 1L bottle
- Most producers can ship internationally
- Many offer smaller bottles perfect for souvenirs
Remember, good olive oil should:
- Have a fresh, grassy smell
- Give you a slight peppery kick at the back of your throat
- Come in a dark glass bottle or tin (never plastic!)
Whether you’re cooking up a storm or just want to take a tasty piece of Zakynthos home with you, our olive oil is something special. Drop by any of these places, mention you read about them on Zante Vibes, and they’ll treat you like family!
